Oleg Lundstrem was born in the family of a teachergymnasium. In 1921, his father was invited to work on the CER in Harbin. First, his father taught physics at school, and later became a lecturer at the institute. In 1932, the future jazzman entered the Polytechnic Institute and the musical technical school. In 1935, the world became interested in jazz. At first Oleg Lundstrem did not pay attention to the new music. But once again picking up records for a party, I came across a play that was performed by Duke Ellington, the famous orchestra in the USA and Europe. The young musician was stunned. After that, he became acquainted with the works of Louis Armstrong.
Jazz made a strong impression on Oleg andhis fellow musicians. They started to play this music at the dance. Oleg Lundstrem on hearing from the plates reproduced the arrangements. Young musicians decided to organize a jazz orchestra. Oleg Lundstrem was elected to the position of head. At first, the repertoire included foreign compositions. Over time, the head began to make jazz arrangements for Russian songs. In 1947, all the musicians of the orchestra come to the Soviet Union. In 1953, Oleg Lundstrem completed training in composition and conducting at the Kazan Conservatory. In 1984, Oleg Leonidovich received the title of People's Artist of Russia. In 1993 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science at the Academy of San Marino. The outstanding jazzman passed away in 2005.
As mentioned above, Oleg Lundstremheaded the orchestra in 1934. Then it consisted of 9 musicians, including the head. A year later, the orchestra won great popularity in Harbin. In 1936, the musicians moved to Shanghai. Here they had a great success. After the war, the musicians became 19 - a full big band was formed. Then Oleg Leonidovich decides to try himself as a composer.
The first work he wrotecalled "Interlude". Oleg Lundstrem's music was based on the intonations of S. Rachmaninoff. The next work he wrote was the play Mirages. Since all the musicians of the orchestra were Soviet people, in 1947 they and their families moved to the USSR. Kazan was chosen because of the presence in it of the conservatory. The musicians were eager to get an education. They expected their collective to be made the state jazz orchestra of the Tatar ASSR. But this did not happen. The CPSU Central Committee announced that the Soviet people do not need jazz.
The musicians were distributed in different orchestras.cities. Oleg Lundstrem himself received the position of violinist at the Opera and Ballet Theater. The artistic director of the philharmonic society organized jazz concerts from time to time. This gave the orchestra O. Lundstrem a chance not to disintegrate. The concert program included Soviet and Tatar songs. Oleg Leonidovich made jazz arrangements for them. In 1956, the team became officially concert pop orchestra conducted by O. Lundstrem. Such musicians and vocalists as A. Pugacheva, G. Garanian, I. Otieva, M. Kristalinskaya, V. Obodzinsky and others worked here at different times.
