Lipetsk Drama Theater has been around for almost 100 years. In his repertoire are classic plays, as well as works by Soviet contemporary playwrights, performances based on stories of children's fairy tales.
Lipetsk Drama Theater named after Tolstoy L.N.was opened in the summer of 1921. The first performance was the play "Sawa" by Leonid Andreev. Put it director V. Ruslov. In winter, there were premieres of such performances as “Kashirskaya Antiquity”, “Free Life”, “Dark Spot”, “Wave” and so on. There were 25 actors in the troupe. Artists were invited to local and Moscow. Since 1923, the theater did not have its own troupe. In the winter, there were no performances on his stage, in the summer groups from other cities came on tour.
In the 30s, the city decided tothe restoration of the stationary theater and the assembly of his troupe. In 1931, actors were recruited. The premiere performance of the updated theater was held in February 1932. It was the play "First Horse". Residents of Lipetsk fell in love with the theater from the very first productions. Then the actors gave their audience such performances as Othello, Woe From Wit, Anna Karenina and other classic plays. Also, the theater did not disregard the plays of contemporary playwrights. Since the building was small and could not accommodate everyone in the auditorium, the troupe organized outdoor performances that were held in the working clubs.
During the war years, many actors went to the front toprotect your homeland. Some of them died. Artist V.Litavrin received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. One of the streets in Lipetsk is named after him. The theater continued to work during the war years. Artists drove along fronts with performances and concerts.
In the late 50s - early 60s of the 20th century, Lipetskdrama theater changed its repertoire. Now, the main heroes of the performances are bold, disinterested people, hard workers who are able to fight. For example, a play by N.Wirths entitled “Dali the Blind”. The main character of this production is the secretary of the district committee, who is fighting for new ideals of morality.
In the 60s-70s of the 20th century, the heyday of the theater was in full swing. The repertoire was replenished with a large number of different productions.
In 1981, the theater was named L.N.Tolstoy. This phenomenon is unique. In Russia, there is no longer any theater that bears the name of this writer. In 1994, another significant event occurred. The theater was awarded the title of "state academic".
The repertoire of the Lipetsk Drama Theater is wide andvaried. The troupe pleases its audience with performances both from classic plays and from works of modern authors. Also, a large number of theater productions are intended for a children's audience.

Lipetsk Drama Theater Tolstoy L.N.in the 80s he became the founder of the “Melikhovsky springs”. This is a theater festival that takes place in Melikhovo near Moscow. In the museum-reserve of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov various theater companies play performances on his works. There is a festival since 1982. Previously, only Russian troupes gathered at the “Melikhov Spring”. Since 1999, the festival has acquired international status. In 2010, the 11th International “Melikhov Spring” was held, which is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov.
As mentioned above, Lipetsk Dramathe theater is the only one in our country that bears the name of the writer Leo Tolstoy. This fact obliges the troupe and management to much. The theater conducts serious educational activities. In particular, it is the organization of literary meetings. This event takes place every year in the theater. Artists, directors, writers, theater critics, critics, philologists, and art historians come to these meetings from all over the country and from other countries. The event is held in the form of a conference.
