Socket 1156: First CPU socket for a CORE family of CPUs

Official sales of devices based oncomputing platform "Socket 1156" started in 2008. These were the most productive processor solutions and the most functional sets of system logic. This processor socket was considered relevant until 2011, when it was replaced by the LGA 1155 platform.

History of appearance

В конце 2007-начале 2008 года стало очевидно, что LGA 775 processor socket has reached its maximum, for the further development of processor technology Intel had to offer something new to the market. This "something new" and became the "Socket 1156". The layout of its semiconductor chips has been radically reworked, and the changes made have achieved a significant increase in performance. Among the nuances that made it possible to increase productivity are:

  • The emergence of NT technology, which allowed to create 2 data processing streams on one computing unit.

  • Integration of the "north bridge" of logic in the CPU.This accelerated the exchange of information between the processor and the RAM. This solution also simplified the layout of motherboards. Well, the exchange of information between the "north bridge" and the processor for this reason has become much simpler.

  • Transferring from the motherboard to the silicon crystal of the CPU of the integrated graphics accelerator. When using the built-in video accelerator, this also made it possible to increase the speed of the PC.

All of the above innovations are relevant to this day, they can be found even in the most recent models of central processors from this manufacturer of computer equipment.

List of chipsets

Всего 4 возможных набора чипсетов было presented for this platform. Isolated on this list is P55. It did not allow the use of a built-in video accelerator and was aimed at installing a discrete graphics card. The corporate segment, in turn, was targeted by Q57. In this chipset, there was support for proprietary technology from Intel - AMT. With its help, the network administrator could connect to the PC and get control of it. This chipset also supported embedded graphics cards in the CPU. The Q57 was almost the complete equivalent of H57. The only difference was that in this case AMT technology was not activated. The H55 chipset was the least functional solution for Socket 1156. The motherboard based on it did not allow to create RAID arrays that were available to the owners of all other solutions. As in the previous case, these motherboards did not support AMT technology.

CPUs

The most affordable solutions for "Socket 1156"there were Pentium chips (they had higher frequencies and 2 computational modules) and Celeron (in this case there were both single core and dual core models, the frequencies of these CPUs were the lowest in the family). A step higher were the processors of the i3 family. They had 2 blocks, but the presence of NT technology made it possible to turn them into a full-fledged 4-core CPU. An even more productive processor family was the i5. They could be 2- (with NT support and 4 threads, like i3) or 4-core. Increased clock speeds and a larger amount of cache memory made it possible to bypass the younger models without any problems in performance. The most productive processors are i7. In this case, the cache memory was further increased. The same can be said about the frequency. Also, the number of threads in this case was equal to 8, and the number of cores - 4.

Perspectives of the computing platform

Of course, since the beginning of sales of this platform8 years have passed, during this time the LGA 1156 processor socket has become obsolete. The "socket" is not supported by the manufacturer even by the current moment. Owners of such PCs make sense to think about updating their computer right now. In the majority of cases, the computing resources of this platform are still sufficient for solving most tasks. But the time is not far off when it will be no longer enough. Therefore, it makes sense to think and look in the direction of LGA1151, which is now the most advanced computer solution.

Summary

So far, “Socket 1156” is relevant. But it is definitely better now for owners of such computers to think about new modernization. Very soon the moment will come when such a PC will become obsolete and will not meet the requirements put forward to it.
