Sevastopol is one of the most beautiful cities of Crimea, which went down in history thanks to the feats of the Russian sailors and ordinary people, who always began to defend their native land with their breasts. Although many of its historical and architectural monuments were repeatedly destroyed during the fighting, they were restored in peacetime. Thanks to the efforts of the townspeople today, as well as 150-160 years ago, the Count quay meets guests arriving from the sea. Sevastopol is proud of its own landmark, the photos of which adorn almost all tourist avenues.
The first boat dock in the area of modernNakhimov Square was built in 1783. On the eve of the arrival of Empress Catherine the Great to Sevastopol, work was done on the improvement of the city. Their result was including the replacement of wooden steps of the pier with stone. By order of Prince Grigory Potemkin, the new main pier was called Ekaterininskaya.
After the departure of the Empress there usually went tohis boat to the shore, Count M. Voinovich. At that time, this brave admiral served as commander-in-chief of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and lived on his farm on the North side. So the name “Grafskaya quay” was fixed in the people, which continued to exist even in the Soviet period.
After 60 years after visiting the city of Catherine the Great, the authorities of Sevastopol decided that the city needed the main entrance from the sea.
To create a project of such a facility was entrustedColonel John Upton. He submitted his work for approval in October 1844 and, having received approval, took up the construction of the pier, which lasted about 2 years.
Although the building was originally intended fordecorations of the city center, throughout its history, he had to repeatedly "war". Thus, in the days of the first defense of Sevastopol, by the decision of the command of the Russian army, the bastions of the city were supplied with ammunition and food through the Grafskaya quay. She was even “wounded,” like a real soldier. This event occurred at the end of August 1855, when the enemy’s rocket hit a barge moored to the dock with gunpowder, which caused an explosion and caused considerable damage.
Grafskaya Wharf (Sevastopol, address:Nakhimov Avenue, 4) witnessed the sad events in the Russian Empire. For example, in November 1920, units of the Red Army, commanded by M. V. Frunze, broke through in the Perekop area and moved to Sevastopol. Lieutenant-General P. Wrangel, trying to avoid major casualties among the soldiers of the south of Russia, gave them the order to evacuate. Within a few days, up to 150,000 people left the Crimea, including approximately 70,000 soldiers and officers.
In 1925, the Count's Quay (Sevastopol) was renamed the Quay of the Third International.
In the middle of the autumn of 1941 near the Grafskayathe pier was the firing artillery position of the cruiser "Chervona Ukraine". For 20 days the ship fired at the enemy. Especially great damage it caused the enemy on November 11, when his gun was crushed by 3 enemy batteries, 18 armored carriers were destroyed and three companies of German soldiers were destroyed. However, the next day, the Luftwaffe planes dropped 6 bombs on the cruiser. The struggle for the survivability of the vessel was not crowned with success, and it sank.
He remembers the marina and a joyous day on May 9, 1944, when the Naval flag of the USSR was hoisted over the colonnade of the Grafskaya quay.
During the restoration of the dilapidatedThe city was renovated and Grafskaya Wharf. The reconstruction of the staircase was carried out according to the design of V. Artyukhov and A. Mikhaylenko, and in 1987-1988 the colonnade was restored. Sevastopol made it its main architectural symbol and business card, which was shown to guests with pleasure. Since then, nothing has changed, except that after the entry of the Crimea into Russia, the number of tourists who want to see this silent evidence of the military exploits of their grandfathers has increased.
Так как это сооружение относится к числу главных tourist attractions not only of the city, but of the whole Crimea, it is easy to reach by public transport. In particular, from the railway or bus station of Sevastopol to the Grafskaya Wharf, you can get there by taking trolleybus No. 1, 3, 7, 9 or route taxis No. 109, 110, 112, 4, 84 and following to the Ploshchad Nakhimov stop.
At the moment, Grafskaya Pier (Sevastopol)consists of a colonnade and a staircase. John Upton took as a basis samples of ancient architecture, giving the construction features of a classical style. In particular, the double colonnade is made according to the canons of the Doric order and forms propylene. The columns carry the entablature, which is crowned with an attic. On it are fixed convex figures indicating the date of construction. Before the colonnade, 4 marches in the direction of the sea, a rather wide main staircase made of Inkermanian stone descends. It is decorated with marble lions by sculptor Ferdinando Pellichio.
Many fragments of the history of the Count's Quay andSevastopol reflected on the memorial plates, enshrined in the construction. They are set in memory of the liberation of the city from the Nazi invaders, as a reminder of the tragedy of those who were forced to leave their homeland during the Civil War, in honor of the hero-sailors of the cruiser “Chervona Ukraine” and others.
