During his life in Siberia, Yershov was the patronDmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev, a famous scientist. Since the boy's father died when the child was only 13 years old, Dmitry needed a mentor. And it was P. Ershov who helped Mendeleev to enter St. Petersburg Pedagogical University.
A biography for the children of this writer could only be collected from the amazing and remarkable cases that were numerous in his life.
The history of this work is veryis unusual. One of the teachers at Yershov at the university was Pletnev, a great friend of Pushkin. Once he gave an assignment to students to write a paper about folk art. The writing of the young writer shocked Pletnev, and he even read an excerpt at a lecture. This manuscript was the first part of The Little Humpbacked Horse. The tale was shown to Pushkin, who responded about it with great enthusiasm.
The tale was written in verse and told about the youngest of three sons, who were entrusted with protecting the fields from an unknown thief at night.
