Exhaust system partsare intended for the removal of gases from the combustion chamber of the engine. When harmful substances pass through this "main line", they are cooled and filtered. Thus, less toxic substances polluting the air get to the environment. In addition, the exhaust system serves to reduce the noise in the car (produce it in the muffler).
This device consists of such parts as:
All these parts remove, filter and cool the exhaust gases that exit the engine cylinders.
Principle of operation and arrangement of the exhaust system
First, harmful substances from the engine fall intoan exhaust manifold. At the same time, they pass the path along the outlet channel. Then the gases begin to move along all the other details. Passing the filtration process, these substances become less toxic, and with each centimeter of the way to the exit they are cooled to air temperature. And now more in detail about these stages.
After the combustion products have got into theexhaust manifold, they are sent to the intake pipe of an additional muffler, and then to the main resonator. Inside both devices there are partitions with a lot of small holes. They must pass through the gases: with noise coming from the cylinders, they pass through these holes, so that their sound wave is greatly weakened.
In order for the spent substances to pass throughthis long way, the engine needs to spend about 3-4 percent of its capacity. And this is provided that all the connections of the exhaust system are leakproof. The elements that provide this are special heat-resistant gaskets. Between them are installed silencer pipes and other elements. All this together is the exhaust system.
Catalyst
Unlike domestic carsproduction, all foreign cars are additionally supplied with an element such as a catalyst. Without this detail, there is not a single German and Japanese exhaust system. "Volkswagen", "BMW", "Audi", "Renault", "Toyota" - all these cars are equipped with a catalyst. So, in this detail neutralization of harmful substances (nitric oxide, carbon and hydrocarbon) takes place. For this reason, this mechanism is also called a catalytic afterburner and a neutralizer. It burns the remains of fuel, which are not burned in the cylinders of ICE. In addition, filtration of harmful substances takes place in the catalyst. Before they come out, the exhaust systems will delay all toxic substances in the filter.
So, we have learned the design of the exhaust system and the principle of its operation.
