William Golding - English novelist, laureateNobel Prize, the author of the famous novel "The Lord of the Flies". Like many great authors, fame came to him not immediately. The novel, which later became a bestseller, was rejected by publishers for a long time. But, thanks to spiritual and ethical issues, the decision of which Golding devoted his creativity, his books were on a par with the best works of English classical prose.
The future writer was born into a teacher's family,a champion of realistic philosophical views. Golding's mother supported, although not very actively, the British feminist movement. The family unanimously agreed that the son is obliged to follow in the footsteps of his father. And William, at the insistence of his parents, engaged in natural science. But the author of the "Lord of the Flies" has been interested in literature and history since childhood. So already in the first year of college, Uliyam Golding focused on studying books on literary criticism and the history of the Ancient World.
His first works were poems. In his student years, poetry for a young man was a hobby rather than a serious creativity. However, several poetic works were still published.
After college, Golding continued his studies inOxford. After graduating from the university, he taught philosophy and English. A special place in the writer's biography is occupied by the Second World War. Service in the naval forces radically changed the worldview of the teacher of English. The desire of people to destroy their own kind, which he saw in these years, deprived him of all faith in the kindness of the human soul. Interest in modern social problems, as well as a deep knowledge of the culture and traditions of the ancient tribes formed a unique style of narration.
In 1983, the writer was awarded the Nobel Prizepremium. William Golding, whose biography evolved under the influence of the most important events in the world and society, dedicated his works to the problems of modern man, using at the same time allegory and mythical subjects. Many critics of his prose considered too pessimistic, to which the writer once said: "The science makes me pessimistic, spiritual values, on the contrary, inspire optimism."
Despite universal success among readers, amongcritics were literary scholars who believed that Golding's novels lacked the intellectual substantiation of the plot. One member of the Nobel jury refused to vote for Golding, finding his prose purely English. As for the famous novel "The Lord of the Flies", among literary scholars there is an opinion according to which the allegorical devices in the work only weigh down the main plot.
William Golding, whose books have becomebestsellers, several times sent the manuscript of his first novel to various publishing houses. And only after twenty unsuccessful attempts he managed to publish the book. The novel reflects the problems of society, which in allegorical form was presented to readers by William Golding. "Lord of the Flies" is a fantastic story of children and teenagers caught up in an atomic disaster on an uninhabited island.
During the first days, children are delighted.Parents are not around. They are completely independent. But nobody is in a hurry to help them. Teenagers are forced to learn how to survive in difficult conditions. As in every society, they have their own leader. At the beginning of the narrative, adolescents are ordinary modern children. But the more their lives become more complex, the more immoral their behavior becomes. The novel is a symbolic parable that raises pressing political and religious issues.
Recognition of the book did not immediately. But as the readers' interest grew, the attention of the critic grew. Today, "Lord of the Flies" is included in the curriculum of English literature in colleges. According to the article in one of the respected and prestigious publications, Golding's novel is the best works in English over the past century.
A huge love of readers sought Golding's novel "The Lord of the Flies" after the release of the film of the same name.
After the recognition by the readers and critics of thehis novel Golding left teaching forever. The first years after the publication of the "Lord of the Flies" he worked on other works. The next book of the English writer was the novel The Heirs. Some influence on the author was the work of Herbert Wells, in particular his scientific and journalistic essay "Essays on History." In "Heirs" Golding uses a historical plot, framing him in an adventure genre and, of course, adding fantastic motifs.
From the pen of William Golding also published novels "Vorishka Martin", "Free Fall", "Spire". Among the later works - "Credentials", "In close proximity".
William Golding died in 1993. More than a year he suffered from an oncological disease. But the cause of death was a heart attack.
