Making a straight-through muffler with your own hands is a simple and interesting exercise. Since the entire exhaust system of the motorcycle is in sight, making it a bike decoration is not difficult.
Muffler material
Before you decide to create your own masterpiece of the forward flow on a motorcycle, you can familiarize yourself with commercially available ready-made mufflers. On the market are models of various materials:
- Titanium is one of the best. Light, beautiful and almost do not heat up.
- Aluminum - perhaps the most lightweight, but during the work very hot.
- Carbon - beautiful, light and not heated, but very fragile.
- Steel - reliable and strong, but very heavy and hot.
Of course, the price is different.You can find a suitable one, considering the size of the motorcycle, and you can choose the muffler recommended by the manufacturer. Installing the finished forward flow on a motorcycle will take much less time. But if you still want to do it yourself, then you should be patient.
Manufacturing straight-through muffler
In order not to disrupt the operation of the engine and prevent the motorcycle from igniting, before we start making a direct flow to the motorcycle with our own hands, we will take measurements from the bike and draw a drawing:
- Вооружимся рулеткой и замеряем расстояние от connections of the muffler and the engine to the footrest. Then from the stand to the end of the motorcycle. Thus, the required pipe length is taken into account in view of its bending. If the silencers are on both sides, then the second side is measured on the same principle.
- Be sure to draw the schemes of the future construction for each side separately, mark the number of connections and the bend radius (if it will be).
- We take the pipe 50-60 cm longer than necessary (we take into account the bending and possible errors). As a rule, use stainless steel pipe with a diameter of 10 mm.
- With the help of a pipe bender, we give the necessary shape of a forward flow on a motorcycle. We try on the bike. It must fully comply with the measurements.
- For the "filling" you can take a thin metal sheet and drill a lot of holes in it with a diameter of at least 5 mm, then roll it up into a tube. It is more convenient to use a metal grid.
- The grid (or sheet with holes) is placed inside the steel pipe.
- Glass wool is hammered between the walls of the inner tube and the outer one. You can first wrap the inner tube with glass wool, and then place it in the outer one.
- We connect all this construction with threaded hooks. Unlike fixing with rivets, the mount is not visible outside.
- Bonded with flame retardant sealant.

Care and care
The main problem is the forward flow mufflers onA motorcycle is a carbon that collects inside and settles on the walls. The more accumulated it is, the more it interferes with the release of exhaust gases, respectively, and the engine to work harder.
The second problem is the burning of the material (for example glass wool) inside the muffler. This becomes noticeable when the timbre of the exhaust sound changes.
So that these problems do not interfere with enjoying riding your favorite bike, you must periodically look into the muffler and clean it, change the filler.
How to make the silencer quieter
As a rule, the owner of the motorcycle will do everythingto be heard. Tips, how to make the roar of the engine unforgettably loud, a great many. But what if, on the contrary, you want to get rid of the "wild roar"? Here are some tips:
- Install another silencer provided by the manufacturer.
- Replace the silencer filling with sound insulating material.
- Instead of the factory put a two-chamber full-size muffler.
- If a loud sound comes from the wear of the inner tube, it should be replaced.
- Mount the resonator. In the cavity chamber, the sound is extinguished before it enters the muffler bank.
- Use additional resonating tips.
- Acoustic film can help. It is used both outside and inside the muffler, as well as around the pipes. It reduces vibrations and decibel levels.
- Install the catalytic converter. In general, it is designed to reduce the proportion of harmful substances in the exhaust gases, but also copes well with sound insulation and vibration.
