Machine "eight" - a car with a frontdrive. The model was produced from 1984 to 2003 in several modifications. Experience in the production of front-wheel-drive vehicles at the plant in Togliatti was not, although the development of those was started in 1971, simultaneously with the production of the basic model VAZ 2101. The project to create a model with a front-wheel drive was constantly pushed back, and as a result, more than 7 years took up design work.

After the tests, the G8 machine was called VAZ 2108 "Samara" and was recommended for serial production. However, the process of finalizing the nodes and mechanisms, together with the preparation of the documentation, took several more years. The car went to the series only in 1984, and on sale appeared a year later.

The body type hatchback was designed in the style of some angularity, which gave the car a special charm, the exterior lines created the impression of impetuosity, and the salon seemed spacious and comfortable. The only drawback of the new model was a poorly designed landing in the back seat. It was necessary to manipulate the door and folding seats, which resulted in a narrow passage opening into which it was necessary to squeeze. However, this lack was more than compensated by many advantages, and the machine "eight" quickly became popular.
Power unit VAZ 2108 from the very beginning of productionwas in three versions, the engine volume of 1100 cubic / cm was installed complete with a mechanical 4-speed gearbox, and the engines in the volume of 1500 and 1300 cubic / cm were equipped with 5-step gearbox. All engines of "Samara" were transverse, 4-cylinder, in-line, with an upper camshaft arrangement. The fuel injection of most of the produced "eights" was carburetor, and the export vehicles were equipped with injection systems.
Chassis VAZ 2108 is the front and rearsuspension, four shock absorbers and a braking system. The front suspension is soft, swinging (like McPherson). The front end is equipped with two telescopic shock absorbers, complemented by a pair of spiral springs. The rear suspension is torsion-lever, equipped with double-acting shock absorbers and steel springs. In some cases, the "eight", a car tuned by the owner, demanded the reinforcement of the rear suspension, and then reinforced springs were put on the back.
G-brakes combined, frontdisc, self-adjusting, rear drum type, also with automatic adjustment of the working gap of a pair of drum-shoe. The brake system of the car works by a principle of hydraulics, the liquid acts from the main cylinder in cylinders peripheral on a two-circuit scheme. All four wheels are independent, if the brake fails on one or two wheels, the others work as usual.
