South Goa is one of two counties in Goa(India). The Portuguese founded the colony here in 1510, extending it to the existing state borders throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The union territory, known as Goa, Daman and Diu, in 1961 became part of the Indian state. In 1965, Goa became an independent territory, which in 1987 was reorganized into a state with two districts, each with its capital: Panaji in the north and Margao in the south.
