Miraculously, not hitting the funnel, he jumped over the fence, studded with iron peaks, and found himself in a potato field.
A little further, there was a real dense forest, onlyTereshka would not have time to reach him, as the dogs overtook him. But he shot one of them. Pistol jammed on the second shot. The dog jumped, but the man managed to grab him by the collar and break his back. All the way to the forest was free.

They were able to explain themselves in a mixture of German and Russian. The man learned some German words in Germany, the girl was taught to speak a little in Russian by her friend, who was also captive. Tereshka had a plan: to cross the Alps and walk to Trieste. There, according to rumors, there were detachments of resistance. Here it was important not to fall back into the hands of the fascists, not to allow them to hang themselves on a silk black noose under a drumbeat.
Of course, it will not be able to convey those emotions and feelings that arise when reading a book, its summary. Bykov's Alpine Ballad is filled with despair, hope, faith and amazing strength of mind.

Suddenly they heard the sound of gunfire. Ivan, looking out of the crevasse, found a heftling that followed Julia. He ran away from the estate in their direction, while the Germans beat on him with machine guns. After the prisoner disappeared behind the rock, the shots stopped. Ivan hurried from this place to go as far as possible.

At the last escape, their company was able to reach Ukraine. Once near a village, the fugitives sent Tereshka for provisions. But the Germans saw him. In spite of the fact that Ivan managed to hide in a hut on the way, hiding there under the stove, the policeman “smoked” him out of the shelter. He decided to set fire to this house, because of which the fugitive was betrayed by the owner's spouse. He did not have anger at this woman, but he wanted to shoot the police traitor.
Getting out on a bare slope from a crevice, Ivanunexpectedly discovered that the betting, whom the Italian called crazy, is still alive. He walked behind them, demanding food. I had to share a piece of precious bread with him, because Tereshka was afraid that they would be betrayed by this terrible betting. Ivan, of course, understood that he needed to be killed, but only the insane were completely helpless, so the man did not raise his hand. He later regretted it very bitterly.
They found a path on the slope and followed it.It was very cold, the camp clothes were not warm at all. Julia on the way told Ivan about herself. As it turned out, she grew up in a very rich family. Having fallen in love with a communist, she left everything for him. The girl considered the USSR a fabulous country in which everyone is happy and equal. Ivan decided not to persuade her, not becoming to tell how life is really hard there.
In the evening it snowed.Tereshka stubbornly went ahead, he wanted to go through the mountain range as quickly as possible, only Julia was out of power. And again he could not throw this defenseless girl. He threw it on his shoulders and walked along a slippery narrow path. Only in the morning they crossed the pass and were in the area of meadows.
Ivan still did not have a girlfriend.After his father died of hunger, he had to raise his family. Understandably, then it was not to love. The only example of such a relationship for him was the love between a young nurse and a senior lieutenant (he served as an orderly for him). The feelings of this couple were serious and strong, but after the young man died, the girl quickly switched to another. After that, the girls seemed to Ivan to be perfidious and impermanent. He thought that he needed to commit suicide instead of being captured by the Germans. He also considered his country to be fair, and he tried to explain it to the girl. In Belarusian villages, hunger was a temporary phenomenon for him, while depressions were completely random errors.

In these terrible conditions, in hardships, left alone with hope only, young people were able to awaken in their hearts a real deep feeling, which they had never experienced before. Something secondary, unsaid, keeping them all the time at a distance, was suddenly happily experienced, overcome. In the midst of the primeval nature of the surrounding mountains, in a step from a terrible death, a powerful, mysterious and unexplored was born, it craved, lived, called and scared. The lovers in the meadow spent the day, it was all that they measured out in this life.
They are again overtaken by crazy betting.He had to give more bread. Ivan's wound began to bleed again, a ragged dog bite did not heal. Geftling disappeared for a while, but a day later he reappeared, no longer alone. Behind him, he brought the Germans, saying that they would give Russian a lot of bread.
